C.T. Male was retained to provide an initial study – with schematic design and cost estimates –for various options to heat, cool and ventilate the 2500-square-foot historic Fulton County courthouse. Additionally, C.T. Male was to provide a new roofing system for an adjacent 1850-square-foot building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings, and is the oldest operating courthouse in New York State. Because the courthouse was built in 1759, the HVAC design had to provide an aesthetically pleasing appearance, as well as take into consideration the limitations of the existing structure to support new equipment. The courtroom is presently not air conditioned, but is heated with steam radiators. After client selection of which HVAC and roof replacement options to pursue, detailed design documents were produced by C.T. Male. Taking cost and schedule into account, a 25-ton packaged rooftop gas-fired DX unit was selected, and a new EPDM membrane-type roof was installed over the existing built-up roof system. New power circuits, natural gas piping and concealed ductwork was installed. New copper flashing and coping was installed to match what was already in place. Because the existing roof could not support the weight of the HVAC unit, new steel framing was installed to span 30 feet between masonry parapets. All work was carefully coordinated around the busy court schedule.
