Protecting Communities from Disasters

Although you have little control over the occurrence of natural disasters in your community, mitigation efforts are some of the best tactics jurisdictions can take to protect a community against the effects of these disasters. Mitigation increases occupant health and safety during a disaster, protects the local tax base, ensures the continuity of essential services, and supports more rapid recovery from disasters. Mitigation provides your community protection in the event of a natural disaster.

C.T. Male Associates Civil Engineering Division is currently working with the Town of Wallkill, under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant–Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding for long-term recovery and resiliency projects. Funding is being delivered through the NY Rising Community Reconstruction (NYRCR) Program of the New York State Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR).

During Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, Route 211 was flooded by stormwater runoff from an unnamed tributary that discharges into Silver Lake and eventually flows to the Wallkill River.  The impact of this flooding impacted emergency services, businesses, and homeowners in this area.  The flood waters lasted for several hours but the clean-up efforts lasted for days or even weeks following the stormwater events.  The lack of road access affected emergency operations including the Fire Department and Ambulance Services.  C.T. Male Associates is now working with the Town, through the New York Rising Community Reconstruction planning process, to design and construct a regional flood control basin and to discharge a portion of the currently piped storm drainage system.  The result will be to reduce the frequency and the extent of the flooding that occurs on Route 211 in the future.
