City Hall Accessibility Alterations Police Station Entrance and Platform Lift

City Hall Accessibility Alterations Police Station Entrance and Platform Lift

Cohoes, New York

C.T. Male Associates was retained by the City of Cohoes, NY to assist, design and oversee the implementation of an inclined platform wheelchair lift for accessibility.

The design consisted of alterations to the exterior of the existing city hall police entrance, involving the removal and replacement of the existing stair configuration, and installation of a new inclined platform wheelchair lift for accessibility. This project also involved the addition of a new steel structure canopy to protect the means of egress during inclement weather, while maintaining the historic masonry portico while providing a barrier-free design.

Because of the fact that the existing City Hall is designated as a historic structure in the National Register of Historic Places, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) reviewed the proposed action and gave the opinion that the project would have no adverse impact to the property.  To properly layout the proposed work within the existing alcove, C.T. Male Associates also performed a high definition laser scan survey of the existing conditions to accurately develop the new design within the historic context.

The City of Cohoes now has a fully handicap-accessible entrance to City Hall.  Mayor George Primeau said “the offices and services are here for everyone and it is important that all our residents have access.” For more information about this project, check out the following article from the Times Union about the Cohoes Handicap Entrance.
