Finger Lakes LPG Storage, LLC, a subsidiary company of Inergy, LP from Kansas City Missouri came to C.T. Male Associates to survey and design above ground brine ponds in the Town of Reading, New York, located less than 2 hours from Syracuse NY. These two above ground brine ponds were to be used in the storage of petroleum products.  The two brine ponds were designed at two different sites, which are located approximately one-half mile apart.

The two surface impoundments (Ponds – East and West) were designed to contain 40.7 million gallons of brine solution in lined ponds with earthen embankments.  The brine solution will be removed from nearby subsurface salt caverns to accommodate storage for liquid petroleum gas (LPG).   During the fall season, the brine ponds will be at their fullest, as gas storage at that time will be at its maximum permitted volume in anticipation of the winter heating season.  Conversely, the brine ponds will be the lowest in the spring, when much of the solution has been pumped into the underground caverns to displace and transmit the gas through above ground piping to satisfy winter heating demands.

On the East Pond site, the existing ground surface of the area proposed for the surface impoundment slopes downward to the east at an average inclination of four to seven percent.  A ravine, approximately 35 feet deep, was present in close proximity to the southern edge of the proposed impoundment.  Less than one-half mile downhill (east) of the site is Seneca Lake.  The West Pond site slopes downward to the east at an average inclination of nine percent with a 30 foot ravine directly south of the proposed impoundment.

C.T. Male Associates’ Surveyors, Hydrogeologists and Engineers worked directly with the Owner and other project consultants to design this project.  Throughout this surveying project, C.T. Male Associates provided the following services:

  • Prepared the grading plans
  • Erosion and sediment control plans
  • Visual analysis and simulations
  • Pump and piping design

The project is currently awaiting a NYSDEC permit with construction to begin immediately after its receipt.
