The original structure on the site has been replaced by a new 20,270 SF fire station designed to meet the current and future needs of the Westmere Fire District.  The new program includes six fire apparatus bays, including two drive-through double bays, a radio room with visual oversight of the station’s approach, decontamination and laundry facilities, and locker/shower amenities.  In addition to the fire-matic operations, the new facility provides space for the District’s administrative functions including offices and conference spaces.  To serve the community, the District has also included space for a community hall with a full service commercial kitchen.

The highly visible site is located along the northern side of Western Avenue, Great Western Turnpike (U.S. Route 20), in the Town of Guilderland, Albany County, New York and consists of approximately 2.89 acres which were developed to include a new outbuilding that temporarily housed the fire department during the construction of the new station.  In addition to accommodating the phasing of the project and ongoing operations of the fire department on the site, the work needed to be closely coordinated with the activities of the adjacent EMS facility.

Phase I of the project included the construction of a new 3,350 SF accessory garage, which utilized an energy efficient pre-engineered timber column structure, along with associated site improvements and construction of a new storm water infiltration basin.  The new garage served to house fire apparatus during the completion of Phase II, and is the new home for historic fire equipment to be properly preserved.

In addition to the Architectural design, C.T. Male Associates provided the mechanical-electrical-plumbing and structural engineering, site/civil engineering, surveying, geotechnical investigation, hazardous material abatement design and monitoring. In addition, C.T. Male Associates also coordinated with the Technical Assistance (TA) provider for incentives through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, offering the Fire District single source responsibility for all their professional service needs. The Firehouse held a Dedication and Open House on Saturday October 19, 2013 for the new Fire Department.
